Candy safety

The FDA’s Halloween tips for parents:

  • Feed children a light meal before they go out, and have them wait to eat treats until you have looked through them at home.
  • Throw away anything that is not commercially wrapped, and anything with an odd look, discoloring, tiny pinholes or torn wrappers.
  • If your child has a food allergy, read every label, and skip home-baked treats.
  • For very young children, take out choking hazards such as gum, peanuts, hard candy and small toys.

On the street

  • Drivers: slow down in neighborhoods on Halloween evening and watch for children crossing between parked cars.
  • Walkers: carry a flashlight or glow sticks and stay in groups.
  • Younger children should go out with an adult.

One more thing: daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, the morning after Halloween. Set clocks back an hour before bed.
