Brentwood is a city in Williamson County. The city runs water and sewer for most of the central part of town, police, fire, streets and parks. It does not run trash pickup, electricity or gas, and Williamson County Schools, not the city, runs the public schools. Here is what to set up, in order.
Who to call
- City water and sewer, new service and billing: 615-661-7061, wsbilling@brentwoodtn.gov

Water and sewer
The city buys its drinking water from the Harpeth Valley Utility District and Metro Water Services and supplies most residents in the central portion of Brentwood, according to the city’s water system page. If you live in the eastern or western part of the city, another utility may serve you. Type your address into the interactive service map on that page to find out. The city’s directory lists Harpeth Valley Utility District, Mallory Valley Utility District, Metro Water Services and the Nolensville/College Grove Utility District as the other water providers in Brentwood.
For city service, use the online sign-up form on the billing and customer service page, or print the mail-in form (PDF) and return it by mail, fax or email. Bills go out monthly: water and sewer customers are billed by the 21st and pay by the 7th of the next month. The city’s sewer charge is based on your average winter water use, December through March.
Many Brentwood homes have a low-pressure sewer with a grinder pump instead of a gravity line, the Water Services page says. Grinder pump problems go to the service line, 615-371-0080.
Electricity
Brentwood is split between two electric utilities. Nashville Electric Service generally serves the area north of Concord Road and Middle Tennessee Electric, a member-owned cooperative, the area south of it. Start service with NES or MTE for your address. Outage numbers and maps are in our power outage guide.
Natural gas
Piedmont Natural Gas serves Brentwood under a franchise agreement with the city, according to Piedmont’s 2021 filing with the Tennessee Public Utility Commission. Start, stop or move service on Piedmont’s start-stop-or-move page or by calling 800-752-7504. If you suspect a gas leak, leave the area and call 911 or Piedmont at the same number.
Internet and phone
- Xfinity says it provides internet service in the Brentwood area and lets you set up or transfer service on its Brentwood page.
- AT&T and United Telephone are the phone companies in the city’s utility directory. United’s internet arm, United Communications, offers fiber internet in Middle Tennessee; check your address on AT&T’s site or United’s.
Trash, permits and taxes
- Trash: Brentwood has no city trash service. Hire a private hauler before move-in day. Brush pickup is free and monthly. See our trash and recycling guide.
- Permits: new homes, additions, remodels and pools need a city permit. See our building permits and zoning guide.
- Property taxes: bills come from the Williamson County Trustee and are due by Feb. 28. Older, disabled and veteran homeowners can apply for tax relief or the tax freeze, by appointment at 615-790-5709. See our property tax guide.
Car tags and driver’s license
Register your car with the Williamson County Clerk, 1320 W. Main St., Suite 135, Franklin, 615-790-5712. The county clerk registers vehicles for new residents. Bring proof of identification and residency, your most recent out-of-state registration, and either your lienholder’s name and address or, with no loan, your out-of-state title, the Tennessee Department of Revenue says. Brentwood has a self-service renewal kiosk, for renewals only.
Get a Tennessee driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency if you hold an out-of-state license, the Department of Safety says. Apply in person at a full-service Driver Services Center with two proofs of Tennessee residency (no P.O. boxes); you will take a vision screening and surrender your old license. Drivers from some states must also bring a motor vehicle record from their former state, so check the state page first.
Schools, voting and City Hall

- Voting: register with the Williamson County Election Commission. See our voting guide.
- Pets: dogs must be leashed in city parks except the Tower Park dog park. Lost and roaming animals go to Williamson County Animal Center, 615-790-5590.
